Inside the Blue Mosque

Inside the Blue Mosque

While the previous shot was from the outside, this is captured inside the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (The Blue Mosque) in Istanbul.  Built in between 1609 and 1616 , it has beautiful colour glass windows and blue tile work (from which it takes its name).
The main hall of a mosque is a bare room largely devoid of furniture. There are no pictures or statues. Muslims believe these are blasphemous, since there can be no image of Allah, who is wholly spirit. Everyone sits on the floor and everywhere in the mosque is equal in status. A niche in one of the walls, called a mihrab, shows the direction that the worshipers should face in order to face Mecca. This open area is for praying and is only open for worshipers.

This is an HDR from 3 frames.
