The one that got away

The one that got away

It is not customary to showcase pictures that did not turn out as we envisaged.  We saw this palm frond while walking on the beach in Belize.  The tender colours and the textures of the frond against the coral sand and the patterns created by the ripples gave a strong visual experience.  The “pictures to be” looked perfect to our “inner eye” and was snapped.  However, it did not turn out.  We tried tone mapping, B&W and de-saturation but nothing could restore the capture to its intended glory.  We ended up with a bit of levels and curves to bring out the textures.

Sorry for the long winded story, but sometimes things just do not turn out as intended.  We still have the intended picture displayed for our inner eye, but nothing we can do can bridge the gap between intention and reality.  So this is “the one that got away”.

.

  1. Not to worry, it still looks really good. I feel your frustration though, it’s not a good feeling when reality is so stunning that a camera is inadequate.

  2. Utterly beautifull … well done!

  4. A wonderful capture in and of itself. What we think we saw is not always the reality. In this case you still ended up with a truly impressive image. I just love “as luck would have it”. Well done.
    Cheers

  8. At the first look of the picture, I ‘m remains perplexed few seconds. Don’t worry this situation touch everybody; delete is often the best way!!! But your picture catches the attention and we need to read the entire story before quit…

  9. I think the result is a fine and interesting image. Maybe not what you had originally envisioned but a success none the less I think.

  10. i really like how the palm frond looks semi-submerged in the water with the ripples of water shimmering over it.. but i can’t quite come up with a way to frame this scene uniquely so i think you’ve managed to pull this off just well.. that’s probably how i’d shoot it also.. nice shot! :)

  11. Well, I like it. I love the composition. I like how it looks as though the frond has been preserved in lucite. I also run into that problem sometimes where my vision does not match the photo and try all the things you do to try and find it. One day, you’ll learn a technique, remember this photo and it will be perfect for it.

Not having been there, I don’t have the same problem as you. I like the shot as is and I liked your humble commentary as much.

  13. I think it really works, actually. It looks like some sort of wrong-coloured Zebra lying on its back underwater. Interesting image.

  14. I see an outlandish millipede heading towards deeper water. Really fascinating!

  16. Most of us would have just walked past this oblivious to its presence. That’s not just well noticed, its beautifully shot and composed.

  21. Great shot, like how the diagonal lines draw the eye into the center of this image. Fascinating textures and details.

  22. It is cool looking to me and the main thing is you get to say palm frond and for some reason I like saying palm frond. :)

  23. I like this photo a lot . Great perspective and very interesting ‘palm frond’ ( never heard of this word before ) but what I like the most are tones. Very pretty indeed !

  24. I like the distortion the shallow water causes on the palm. Gives it something magical!

  25. What a great result. I’m glad you decided to show this photo :)
This branch/leaf looks like a skeleton of an ancient creature. At first look at this photo the impact is very strong.
    Excellent!

  26. These are great patterns made by the rippling water over the palm fronds. HDR or not, this result is quite striking.
