Istanbul Fog

Istanbul Fog

Istanbul cover in morning fog. A city so full of life, it awakes your senses. The different noises, the smell, the atmosphere, and it might be that the city is on its most beautiful in fog. The fog works like the silk scarf of a belly dancer, covering the city, making the colors softer, the noise subdued……
Istanbul in fog reminds us of a poem by the Turkish poet Orhan Veli Kanik:

I am listening to Istanbul

I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed;
At first there blows a gentle breeze
And the leaves on the trees
Softly flutter or sway;
Out there, far away,
The bells of water carriers incessantly ring;
I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed.

I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed;
Then suddenly birds fly by,
Flocks of birds, high up, in a hue and cry
While nets are drawn in the fishing grounds
And a woman’s feet begin to dabble in the water.
I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed.

I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed.
The Grand Bazaar is serene and cool,
A hubbub at the hub of the market,
Mosque yards are brimful of pigeons,
At the docks while hammers bang and clang
Spring winds bear the smell of sweat;
I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed.

I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed;
Still giddy since bygone bacchanals,
A seaside mansion with dingy boathouses is fast asleep,
Amid the din and drone of southern winds, reposed,
I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed.

I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed.
Now a dainty girl walks by on the sidewalk:
Cusswords, tunes and songs, malapert remarks;
Something falls on the ground out of her hand,
It’s a rose I guess.
I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed.

I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed;
A bird flutters round your skirt;
I know your brow is moist with sweat
And your lips are wet.
A silver moon rises beyond the pine trees:
I can sense it all in your heart’s throbbing.
I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed.

Orhan Veli Kanik (1914 – 1950)  Turkish poet.

Istanbul dekket av tidlig morgen tåke. Et nokså vanlig syn, men det gjør byen enda vakkrere, tåken svøper seg rundt byen, demper lyder og gjør sol lyset vart og skjørt ……..

  1. I’ve never been there, but I’ve always thought Istanbul to be a fascinating city. Love the poem and the photo.

  2. Hmmm… it’s foggy and I think that might be the George Washington Bridge from the Bronx!

    You’re right about the colors and muffled sound with fog. This is a beautiful shot of a richly historic city. Great poem, too!! You’re very lucky that travel is a big part of your life.

  3. The fog really washes out the colors and makes the city look much more soft. Nice shot.

  4. I have never been to Istanbul but I imagine that it’s a quite exotic place with lots of beautiful things to photograph. Love this as the fog enhances the mystery surrounding Istanbul for me….

  6. If you have smog, you must photograph smog. That intrusive atmosphere makes a terrific shot.

  14. I love the way the fog creates an almost layered effect. The building in the foreground looks like it almost popped out of the fog to been seen clearer.

  27. Ahhh!

  28. If only one could get up at such early hours. This is an experience I selldom have… Wonder why ;-)
