El Vaquero

El Vaquero

There is something about a quiet afternoon on your doorstep watching the world go by…. We found him in Guanajuato Mexico. Imagine he is a vaquero, a Spanish word for an individual who managed cattle while mounted on horseback. The word is derived from “vaca” = cow. (from Latin; vacca). An direct English translation gives you cowboy -

.

  5. Have to say the framing is excellent in this image. Like the high textured walls and the rather interesting man sitting at the entrance. Outstanding composition.

  15. Gringo amigo,
Nice, clear and sharp image, a true cowboy. However since nothing special is happening around him I would have cropped the image a bit more (It would make a stronger portrait I think).

  20. Great photo! He does have a look on his face as if he’s about to jump up and grab your camera! This come straight from a spaghetti western movie :) Very cool!

  21. The strong points in this image are a) the face of the vasquero and b) the texture and light. I would consider cropping the image, since the left part and the window panes a little disturbing. But I’m sure that you’ve tried different solutions, and found this to be the best choice?

  22. Thanks for all your comments and suggestions! It is more than appreciated.
We did try different cropping, from just his face to the whole frame.
This has been slightly straighten and just cropped after that, so it is almost the original composition.
We found that the colors and texture of the walls added “something” to the image – in a way gave it the right atmosphere.
    -
Agree with Geir that the left window is a bit disturbing and tried to “get rid of” it but that left the vanquero a bit “caged”.
So this is what we ended up with.
Cropping is – as everything else! – a matter of taste and preference, remember our first image “Stick and Stones”?
    -
Thanks again for giving you opinion which allows us to see and reflect on improvement!
That’s the way we learn, the way we can advance and the way we can offer better images next time you return!

  23. Though the subject is clearly the cowboy, I think it was better not to crop it much, giving us the opportunity to see the element where he lives. A nice portrait, indeed.

  25. I sense a little tension there – the look in his eyes is somewhat inscrutable and suspicious.. As if he thinks “One wrong move or word, and I’ll put you behind the bars behind me…”

    Great shot!
And I agree it was better not to crop it and leave the guy in his “natural surroundings” ;) Adds much the the picture’s feeling/impression.

  27. Skummel type :-) Et intenst blikk dere har fanget her.
